    Elfrid Payton career timeline

    1. Orlando Magic · 2014–2018

Draft — June 26, 2014 — Philadelphia selected Payton #10 overall out of Louisiana, then flipped him to Orlando on draft night for Dario Šarić's rights and picks. Four Magic seasons as the starting point guard before a February 2018 trade to Phoenix.

Louisiana floor general who stepped into Orlando's starting job as a rookie — All-Rookie First Team and consecutive triple-doubles in March 2015 before the Suns acquired him at the 2018 deadline.

Awards: 2014–15 NBA All-Rookie First Team

    2. Phoenix Suns · 2018

Trade — February 8, 2018 — acquired from Orlando for a 2018 second-round pick (Jarred Vanderbilt). Finished the season in Phoenix, then signed with New Orleans in free agency.

Half-season Suns stop after the Magic trade — free agency path to New Orleans that summer.

    3. New Orleans Pelicans · 2018–2019

Free agent — July 8, 2018 — one-year, $3 million deal with New Orleans. Renounced in July 2019 before the Knicks signing.

Hometown-state Pelicans year — playmaking minutes beside AD before New York offered a multi-year deal.

    4. New York Knicks · 2019–2021

Free agent — July 8, 2019 — two-year, $16 million Knicks deal. Waived and re-signed November 2020 on a one-year deal before Phoenix brought him back in 2021.

Knicks rebuild starter under Fizdale/Thibodeau's early years — two seasons before a Phoenix reunion.

    5. Phoenix Suns · 2021–2022

Free agent — August 11, 2021 — one-year veteran minimum with Phoenix. Left the NBA after 2021–22; Indiana Exhibit 10 in 2023 never stuck.

Second Suns chapter on a minimum — last full NBA season before multi-year free agency and G League stops.

    6. New Orleans Pelicans · 2024–2025

Free agent — October 2024 — Louisiana return on Exhibit 10 / ROS cycles, waived, two Charlotte 10-days in February 2025, then 10-days and a rest-of-season deal back in New Orleans. Pelicans declined the 2025–26 team option June 29, 2025.

Second Pelicans chapter — camp deals, a Charlotte hardship midseason, and a late ROS that ended when New Orleans declined his 2025–26 option.

    7. Sacramento Kings · 2026–present

Free agent — September 16, 2026 — signed a one-year Exhibit 10 / non-guaranteed camp deal with Sacramento to compete for backup point guard minutes behind Darius Acuff Jr. (and alongside Ben Simmons).

Camp invite in Sacramento — Scott Perry reunion from the Magic/Knicks days, competing for the backup PG spot behind Acuff.
