    Royce O'Neale career timeline

    1. Utah Jazz · 2017–2022

Free agent — July 19, 2017 — undrafted out of Baylor (via two years overseas), signed a 3-year $3.8 million deal with Utah and turned himself into a starting-caliber 3-and-D wing.

Royce O'Neale arrived in Utah in 2017 without ever hearing his name called in an NBA Draft and after spending his first two professional seasons playing in Germany and Spain. What began as a low-risk signing became one of the Jazz's best developmental successes, as O'Neale gradually earned rotation minutes, became Quin Snyder's trusted defensive wing and eventually started every game for consecutive playoff teams. Five years after Utah brought him back from Europe, the Jazz traded him to Brooklyn for a first-round pick — completing a rise from overlooked prospect to one of the most dependable role players of the Donovan Mitchell–Rudy Gobert era.

    2. Brooklyn Nets · 2022–2024

Trade — June 30, 2022 — traded to Brooklyn for a conditional 2023 first that resolved as Philadelphia's pick, #28 — Brice Sensabaugh.

Royce O'Neale arrived in Brooklyn in 2022 for a first-round pick because the Nets believed his defense, shooting and playoff experience could help complete a championship roster around Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Instead, his first season became one of the most chaotic in franchise history, with Irving and Durant both traded before the deadline and O'Neale suddenly shifting from complementary piece on a contender to veteran support for an entirely different team. Through all the change, he remained useful enough for Brooklyn to eventually turn him into three future second-round picks, making his Nets chapter less about what the team accomplished and more about how he remained dependable while everything around him fell apart.

    3. Phoenix Suns · 2024–2026

Trade — February 8, 2024 — acquired at the deadline in a 3-team deal (BKN · MEM · PHX), then re-signed on a 4-year $42 million contract that summer. Traded to Charlotte on June 27, 2026 with Grayson Allen and a 2033 first for Miles Bridges, a 2029 first, and a second-round pick.

Royce O'Neale arrived in Phoenix at the 2024 trade deadline as exactly the kind of player the Suns needed around Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal: a veteran defender who could shoot, rebound and contribute without demanding possessions. His immediate fit convinced Phoenix to re-sign him that summer, and over the next two seasons O'Neale became one of the roster's most dependable floor spacers, shooting better than 40% from three in consecutive years. By the summer of 2026, Phoenix's direction had changed again, and O'Neale was sent to Charlotte alongside Grayson Allen in the Miles Bridges trade, ending a Suns chapter defined less by stardom than by his ability to make almost any lineup easier to build.

    4. Charlotte Hornets · 2026–present

      Trade — June 27, 2026 — acquired from Phoenix with Grayson Allen and a 2033 first-round pick for Miles Bridges, a 2029 first, and a second-round pick.

Royce O'Neale arrived in Charlotte in the summer of 2026 as part of the trade that sent longtime Hornet Miles Bridges to Phoenix, joining Grayson Allen and an unprotected 2033 first-round pick in the return. At 33 years old, O'Neale wasn't brought in as another developmental project; he arrived after consecutive seasons shooting better than 40% from three and nearly a decade spent contributing to playoff teams in Utah, Brooklyn and Phoenix. On a Hornets roster transitioning toward a new generation, O'Neale entered Charlotte as something the franchise suddenly needed more of: a veteran who already understood how to help young talent without taking opportunities away from it.
